Lima, OH – The Meeting Place on Market is proud to announce that we are now serving Fair Trade / Organic espresso for all of our espresso based drinks. Fair Trade Certified and USDA Organic labels follow a growing trend across the country, as social conscious customers desire to purchase products that have a positive impact in the world. According to Fair Trade USA, sales of Fair Trade Certified™ products increased 24 percent at grocery stores during 2010. U.S. sales of organic food and beverages have grown from $1 billion in 1990 to $26.7 billion in 2010.
“Our goal is to impact our community. Serving Fair Trade / Organic espresso is another way The Meeting Place staff and customers can make a difference by promoting fair wages and healthy environmental practices,” said co-owner, Jennifer Brogee. “The way we spend our dollars in the US can positively or negatively impact communities across the world. We want to make sure we have a positive impact.”
Products that are Fair Trade Certified follow strict guidelines to ensure that the farmers who grow the product are paid a sustainable wage, allowing them to support their families. Additionally, farmers must invest some of the profit into community development, benefiting their broader communities. USDA Organic products are grown without synthetic pesticides, and in environmentally friendly ways. Both labels are audited by standards boards to ensure farmers and manufactures are following the strict guidelines.
“We continually evaluate all our suppliers to purchase as much as possible from local, independent businesses. Because coffee isn’t grown in this part of the world, we can make sure we’re purchasing coffee from ethical companies by purchasing products that are Fair Trade and Organic certified,” said co-owner Ruth Ann Stover.
